Your lighting purchase checklist

1. Define the job. Is the fitting providing general room light, task light or accent light? Measure the space and note the intended mounting position before comparing styles.

2. Check the dimensions and installation. Record height, width, ceiling clearance, weight and any support requirements. Ask a qualified electrician about the existing circuit, mounting and local rules.

3. Compare technical specifications. Check lumens, colour temperature, dimmability, replaceable versus integrated light sources, cap type where applicable and the manufacturer's declared location suitability.

4. Check controls. Confirm the exact dimmer, hub, wireless protocol or app compatibility. Do not assume that every smart fitting works with every home system.

5. Compare the complete cost. Include delivery, bulbs, drivers, control accessories and installation. Confirm whether tax is included and whether the retailer delivers to your specific postcode.

6. Read the retailer's terms. Check returns, warranties, spare parts and replacement light-source availability. Save the specification and order confirmation for future reference.

Use this checklist as general purchasing guidance, not an electrical installation instruction. Bathroom, outdoor and other specialist installations require appropriate local professional advice.
